About

What Bizfari is, and where the data comes from

Bizfari is a business directory and a small business publication. It lists 510,598 businesses across 3,139 towns in 15 states, and writes about what it takes to run one.

Who publishes it

Bizfari is published by Powers Advertising, an advertising agency in Knoxville, Tennessee. It is the same people who run FindKnoxville, a directory for the Knoxville area, and Bizfari is the national version of that idea.

Where the listings come from

The business records come from the Overture Maps Foundation, an open map data project, and are used under the CDLA-Permissive 2.0 license. We do not buy lead lists and we do not scrape other directories.

How a business is assigned to a town

By the town its own address names, and nothing else.

This sounds obvious and it is the thing most directories get wrong. The usual method is to draw a circle around a city center and call everything inside it that city. A circle does not know where a town ends: a fifteen-mile radius around Chattanooga swallows Ringgold, Georgia, and a business in Ringgold then has a page claiming it is in Tennessee. We built it that way first and it put the wrong town on roughly two listings in five. Circles overlap; addresses do not.

What we publish, and what we will not

We report facts in our own words and link to where they came from. Facts are not anybody's property, but the writing is, so we do not republish or reword other outlets' reporting. There is no version of this site that exists to rank on somebody else's work.

Every article carries a real photograph with its credit shown. Nothing is published without one.

We do not sell reviews, ratings, badges or placement in a ranking. A paid listing can be marked as paid; it cannot be marked as better.

What the numbers on this site mean

Counts are queried when the page is drawn, not typed in by hand, so what you see is what the database holds at that moment. Where we show how often crawlers read the site, machines and people are counted separately and never added together. A machine reading a page is worth knowing about and it is not a visit.

Getting something corrected

Open data is wrong sometimes. Hours change, numbers get reassigned, businesses close and nobody tells the map. If a listing is wrong, tell us and we will fix it; reach us through Powers Advertising. A correction costs nothing and does not require you to buy anything.
